Gardening Season is Finally Here! And I Don’t Want to Hear that You Have a “Black Thumb”!
As many of you know, my passion is sports and performance medicine, but as the spring weather approaches, and the days get longer, I’m going to dedicate some of my social media posts to another passion of mine (and hobby) — Gardening!
Aside from the many (and sometimes surprising) health benefits of gardening, I find that there is so much satisfaction in harvesting the crops that I planted with my own two hands, from my own backyard. I know what you’re thinking:
It’s still too cold to plant.
What if we get another frost?
And those comments are valid, but what many new gardeners don’t take the time to do, is plan for the gardening season. That’s right. A successful gardening season requires planning! In order to show off that “green thumb” of yours, you need to know when (which season based on climate) to plant each crop, taking into consideration where (location in the yard) to plant them! Some crops can withstand a frost here and there. Some thrive in the cooler damp climate, some like the shade, and some require all day hot summer sunshine. You just need to know what you want, do your homework, have your seeds ready (I usually save seeds from a previous successful crop but you can purchase them), and plan out your garden space accordingly!
Follow me on social media (Facebook: @HarrisonOakeND and Instagram: @dr.oake.nd) and I’ll walk you through this season’s plant planning in my own backyard, based on last year’s successes!
By end of the month, you’ll be kissing your “black thumb” goodbye and getting your hands dirty (with actual dirt).
Happy planting!
